Speakers You Hear, Not See
In-wall and in-ceiling speakers can be angled toward your seats and positioned so they’re barely noticeable, without sacrificing audio quality. When wall space is limited, a soundbar combines multiple speakers in one slim cabinet at the screen.
A Center Channel Built for Your Screen
Most of a movie’s dialogue comes through the center channel speaker. If you can’t understand the dialogue, you can’t follow the story. We place this speaker directly above or below the screen. Some models can be customized to match your TV’s width for a seamless look, and Hippo’s carries a wide selection to suit every design.
No Visible Rack
Your equipment disappears into existing cabinetry or a discreet equipment location, and reliable control systems send commands to components you’ll never see. Subwoofers can often be concealed in cabinetry too.
Cool, Quiet Components
Receivers, amplifiers, cable boxes, and gaming systems generate a lot of heat, and drilled vent holes usually aren’t enough. Hippo’s typically installs a ventilation fan to exhaust hot air and protect your components’ lifespan. A thermostat-controlled fan can even be mounted remotely in your crawl space, so you never hear it.

Screen Size & Placement
Mounting a TV above the fireplace is popular, and it works well when seating sits far enough back that no one is craning their neck. Before anything is mounted, we mock up the screen size and height from your usual seat so you know it’s comfortable. If it isn’t, lowering the screen, shifting it beside the fireplace, or choosing another wall can dramatically improve the experience without compromising the room’s style.
Managing Sunlight & Glare
If you use the room during the day, sunlight through the windows can wash out the picture. The right window treatments solve this while blending into your décor. Motorized shades can make it automatic. Some TVs will also adjust their brightness depending on the ambient light levels, so you can still enjoy a clear picture.
Acoustics & Calibration
Rugs, furniture, window treatments, bookcases, and wall hangings all help break up reflected sound. Rooms with very high ceilings and lots of bare sheetrock can make dialogue hard to understand. When Hippo’s calibrates a room like this, we fine-tune the system for the clearest possible dialogue. We may also recommend adding soft furnishings and keeping the center channel close to seated ear level.
Speaker Placement Details
- Left and right speakers: Aim for a 45- to 60-degree angle between the speakers and your main seat. We’ll plot the best angle for your room.
- Subwoofer: The worst spot is the middle of the room. The best spot is usually near a corner.
- Surround speakers: These go on the side or rear walls, depending on windows, doorways, and other architectural features. Dipole, bipole, or directional models may fit best, depending on your room and seating.
- Existing homes vs. new construction: In an existing home, wiring wall-mounted speakers is usually easier than wiring ceiling speakers. In new construction, or where there’s easy ceiling access, in-ceiling options open up.
